What the company does
American Tower is a real estate investment trust that owns cell towers and other communications sites in the US and abroad, plus data centers through CoreSite.
It leases space on its towers to wireless carriers, which install antennas and equipment there, usually under long contracts with built-in rent increases. Its data centers lease space and connections to businesses and cloud providers.
As a REIT it must pay out most of its taxable income as dividends. Its fiscal year is the calendar year.
